Yes. The juice cleanse. Those that read me know that over the past year I've participated in a particular juice cleanse various times. The one I do is Dr. John R. Christopher's "Three Day Cleansing Program"; it's what I call a good time.
This one is pretty simple: take 16 oz of prune juice in the morning, and then alternate 8 oz water and apple juice for the rest of the day, repeated three times.
The idea is that it targets the colon and replenishes the mucus stores in the body with fresh liquids and juice. The three day length is also crucial because it allows all things that are in the digestive system, to get out of the digestive system. The prune juice will make sure of that as it sucks all toxins from the farthest catacomb and cockle of your body.
Usually after reading about people have a strong desire to do it. I first heard about it on the grand This American Life by way of David Rakoff (its a good one). For me, it started off as a periodical thing to make sure my body was in proper order, but now its becoming somewhat of a combative measure, using it to counter food poisoning, and now mononucleosis. After doing it I usually feel sufficiently strong, but I've noticed I have a strong desire to pummel my body with red meat and french fries.
My thoughts are if I cleanse my body of toxins, perhaps the mono will go with it. Either way, I can be sure I'll be getting enough liquids.
Time for some prune juice.
